The Story Behind This Shower Renovation

Ottawa Luxury Walk-In Shower Renovation. Complete Structural Reconstruction After Severe Water Damage

Summary: Master Works Renovations uncovered major hidden water damage behind a simple shower upgrade, leading to a complete structural rebuild and a stunning luxury walk-in shower, built to last.

At first glance, this looked like a standard shower replacement. The homeowner simply wanted to update an outdated shower with a modern custom tile design. However, once demolition began, the project revealed something far more serious.

Years of hidden water infiltration had silently destroyed the structure behind the tile. The damage was invisible from the outside.

Behind the walls, structural framing had completely rotted away. The wooden subfloor had deteriorated so severely that sections of the floor were no longer structurally sound. One supporting wall had deteriorated to the point where it literally collapsed during demolition, exposing the neighboring side of the building.

This project immediately transformed from a cosmetic renovation into a complete structural restoration.

That is where experience makes the difference. Many contractors would simply replace tile. Our team rebuilt the entire shower from the structure outward.

Hidden Damage Most Homeowners Never See

Water damage rarely starts on the surface. It develops slowly over many years behind tile, inside walls and beneath the floor.

By the time stains appear, the structural damage is often already severe.

In this shower we discovered:

  • Completely rotted structural framing

  • Major subfloor failure

  • Water-damaged support beams

  • Structural wall collapse

  • Plumbing requiring complete replacement

  • Hidden moisture trapped inside wall cavities

The damage had progressed so far that the floor below was visible through sections of the rotten framing.

Had the shower remained in use much longer, much larger structural repairs would likely have been required.

Complete Structural Reconstruction

Rather than covering damaged materials, every compromised component was removed.

The project included:

  • Complete demolition

  • Removal of all rotten framing

  • New structural wall framing

  • Reinforced blocking

  • New 3/4-inch plywood subfloor

  • Drain reconstruction

  • New plumbing rough-in

  • New pressure-balanced shower valve

  • Structural reinforcement throughout the shower

Everything was rebuilt to create a stronger, safer foundation for decades of use.

Waterproofing Built for Canadian Homes

A beautiful shower means nothing without proper waterproofing. Every waterproofing layer was installed using premium professional systems.

The shower includes:

✔ Schluter® KERDI Shower System

✔ Waterproof shower pan

✔ KERDI waterproof niche

✔ DITRA uncoupling membrane

✔ Cement backer board

✔ Waterproof membrane on all wet surfaces

✔ Proper sealing of every corner and penetration

This creates a complete waterproof envelope that protects the structure from future moisture damage.

One of the Most Difficult Tile Installations We Have Completed

The customer selected an elegant flowing porcelain tile with a continuous wave pattern. Although beautiful, this tile is among the most demanding materials to install correctly. Unlike standard rectangular tile, every course must continue perfectly around every corner. Even a difference of one millimeter becomes visible across the entire shower.

Each tile required:

  • Individual inspection

  • Precision cutting

  • Dry layout planning

  • Continuous pattern matching

  • Laser-level alignment

  • Perfect grout spacing

  • Clean transitions into the recessed niche

The result creates the illusion that the walls were formed from one continuous flowing surface. This type of installation requires patience, planning and advanced tile-setting experience.

Every Detail Matters

Professional renovations are defined by the details.

This shower includes:

  • Premium recessed shampoo niche.

  • Perfectly centered drain.

  • Even grout joints.

  • Clean tile transitions.

  • Custom cuts around plumbing fixtures.

  • Frameless glass enclosure.

  • Consistent tile flow around every wall.

  • Professional waterproof finishing.

Nothing was rushed. Every detail was carefully inspected before moving to the next stage.

The Finished Result

The final shower is dramatically different from the original space. Instead of an outdated shower with hidden structural damage, the homeowner now has:

  • A completely rebuilt structure

  • Modern luxury tile design

  • Waterproof construction

  • Premium Schluter® waterproofing system

  • Frameless glass enclosure

  • Designer recessed niche

  • Precision-installed porcelain tile

  • A shower built to perform for decades

This renovation not only transformed the appearance of the bathroom—it restored the structural integrity of the home.
